01 — In short

Why are rugby shirts made tougher than football shirts?

Rugby shirts are grabbed and pulled in every tackle, so they use heavier, stretchier fabric (about 200–260 GSM, or heavy cotton for classic shirts), double-stitched seams and bartacks at stress points. Many modern shirts are cut tight so there is less fabric to grab.

Every line is checked with you and written on your spec sheet before a sample is made. Change anything to suit your design, market and budget.

03 — Choosing the fabric

Match fabrics compared.

The fabric decides how a kit feels, breathes and takes a print. These are the knits used most for team kits.

FabricTypical weightWhat it suits
Polyester interlock130–170 GSMSmooth face. The best surface for sharp sublimation.
Birdseye mesh120–160 GSMSmall holes for airflow. A classic football shirt fabric.
Dazzle140–180 GSMShiny, tight knit. Typical for basketball and US sports.
Air-knit mesh180–240 GSMHeavier, open knit. Used for ice hockey jerseys.
Polyester–elastane180–260 GSMStretch for fitted cuts: rugby, volleyball, handball.

These are polyester or polyester blends, so they can be sublimated edge to edge.

  • European Union

Fibre names and percentages on the label under Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011. Care symbols to ISO 3758 are standard. REACH limits certain substances in textiles, such as some azo dyes.

  • United Kingdom

Fibre composition labels under the Textile Products (Labelling and Fibre Composition) Regulations 2012, plus care symbols.

  • United States

  • Kids' sizes

Drawstrings in children's clothing follow EN 14682 in Europe. In the US, children's products need CPSIA tracking labels, and hood drawstrings on children's upper outerwear are treated as a hazard (16 CFR 1120).

  • League rules

Leagues and governing bodies set their own kit rules, such as number sizes, colours and sponsor areas. Send your league rules with your enquiry and they go on your spec sheet.

08 — Questions

About the rugby kit.

More answers on the FAQ page.

What is the difference between body-fit and classic rugby shirts?

Body-fit shirts are tight and stretchy, so they are harder to grab. Classic shirts are looser and often cotton, popular for social teams and supporter wear.

Do you make rugby league and sevens kits?

Yes. The same build works for union, league and sevens. Tell us the format and your league rules.

Can rugby shirts be sublimated?

Polyester and polyester–elastane shirts can be fully sublimated. Cotton shirts are printed or embroidered instead.
